Olathe Police say they were called to the area of E. Santa Fe Street and N. Clairborne Road at 7:47 p.m., Friday after a report of a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes.

Officers arrived to discover that the wrong way vehicle had struck the center median and fled the scene. A trail of car parts, vehicle fluids, and other evidence led officers to the parking lot of the Dollar General Store at 112 N. Clairborne Road where the vehicle had possibly been involved in another accident. The suspect vehicle was now unoccupied.

Police entered the Dollar General Store where they were confronted by a man who pointed a handgun at an officer. The officer shot the armed man. Johnson County Med-Act and Olathe Fire personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene. The officer was not injured.

No other injuries were reported. Several other media outlets falsely reported that there was a second person shot. Olathe Police confirm that there was only one person shot and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

As standard procedure, the officer involved is now on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the Johnson County Multi-Jurisdictional Officer Involved Shooting Team. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477 (TIPS).
